Running a cloud kitchen in Bangalore requires a few essential registrations and licenses to ensure smooth operations and compliance with local regulations—especially if you plan to list your kitchen on Swiggy, Zomato, or other delivery platforms.
1. FSSAI Registration / License (Mandatory)
The most important requirement for any food business is the FSSAI Food License.
This is compulsory whether you operate from a commercial space or your home kitchen. Delivery platforms like Swiggy and Zomato will not onboard you without a valid FSSAI registration.
2. Trade License / GBA License
If your cloud kitchen operates from a commercial building with a minimum 40-feet road frontage, you can apply for the GBA (Trade) License from the BBMP.
This license verifies that your business activity is allowed in the commercial zone and follows local norms.
3. Labour License
If you employ workers—whether chefs, helpers, delivery staff, or cleaners—you are required to obtain a Labour License under the Shops & Establishments Act.
This ensures compliance related to working conditions, wages, and safety requirements.
4. Fire & Safety NOC (For Larger Setups)
For bigger cloud kitchens, especially those with heavy equipment, LPG usage, and commercial exhaust systems, obtaining a Fire & Safety NOC from the Fire Department may be necessary.
5. Pollution Control Certificate
Cloud kitchens that use exhaust systems, generators, or heavy cooking equipment may require a Consent for Establishment / Consent for Operation from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB).
6. GST Registration
If your annual turnover crosses ₹20 lakhs, or if you want to claim input tax credit on raw materials and services, you must obtain GST registration.
Most cloud kitchen businesses choose to register voluntarily for easier billing and vendor management.
7. Shop & Establishment Registration
Commercial cloud kitchens must register under the Karnataka Shops & Establishments Act.
This covers employee welfare norms, working hours, and operational safety.
Home-Based Cloud Kitchens
If you are operating from your home, the compliance requirements are much simpler:
- Only an FSSAI registration is required.
- Swiggy and Zomato will onboard you with just the FSSAI.
- Other licenses—like GBA, Labour License, Pollution Control, and Fire NOC—are not issued for residential premises, making them unnecessary for home kitchens.
